Youthful memory in old brains

13 Aug

A paper published in The Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, compared individuals over 80 who had exceptionally good  episodic memory with age matched peers who had average episodic memory. They found that the individuals with superior memory (described in the study as “superagers”) had

  • thicker regions of the anterior cingulate cortex
  • “unusually low densities of age-related Alzheimer pathology”
  • lower frequency of a gene variant linked to Alzheimer’s disease
