A year from now value added will still be invalid

23 Aug

I guess it is good news that Education Secretary Arne Duncan has delayed teacher evaluations based on student test scores for a year. But, as I have pointed out many times here, value added assessments of teaching are invalid. The American Statistical Association agrees.

However, what is invalid now will not become valid in a year. There is a place for testing in education, but using a flawed assessment will lead only to flawed results. Our kids and our teachers deserve better.
