Art Garfunkel’s booklist

18 Oct

While we’re on the subject of book lists, it turns out that Art Garfunkel posts a list of every book he has read since 1968. He includes a list of favorite books. It is interesting to see Garfunkel’s interest in the mystic Gurdjieff.

Here is Garfunkel’s note to his younger self:

Very interesting. Today’s popular musical artists don’t even have a book list. Many of them probably have ghost song writers. I like how Garfunkel read a lot of Gurdjieff and Castaneda in his early days.

Thank you for your comment. I have to confess that I don’t know that much about Gurdjieff, but intend to look into his writings. On the other hand, as someone who was trained in anthropology, I have come to be very skeptical about Castaneda’s work.

I agree and read Casteneda as fiction. As much of a charlatan he turned out to be, he described the apprenticeship/teacher model in a way that is accessible to the Western mind.
